In its final stages, the eighth edition of Close-up Cantieri, the initiative of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park that takes the public to the places of conservation, exceptionally opening the excavation, restoration, and maintenance areas of the ancient Vesuvian city with the last meetings on May 14 and 21.

Through guided tours inside the construction sites, Close-up Cantieri has transformed the spaces of conservation into places of meeting and storytelling, where archaeologists, restorers, architects, and technicians share with the public methodologies, tools, and challenges related to the safeguarding of heritage.

In eight years the project has become one of the most original and engaging experiences in the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, capable of bringing visitors closer not only to the history of the ancient city but also to the complex work that ensures its future every day.

“’Close-up Cantieri’ represents one of the most effective initiatives in showing the public what it really means to take care of an archaeological site like Herculaneum,” declares the Director of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park, Federica Colaiacomo. “Behind every restored environment and every path returned to visitors exists a daily work made up of research, study, maintenance, monitoring, and highly specialized skills. Opening the construction sites means sharing this heritage of knowledge and making the public aware of the complexity and beauty of conservation work.”

“The enthusiasm and participation recorded during this edition,” Colaiacomo continues, “confirm how important it is to create opportunities for direct interaction between the public and the professionals working in the Park. Over the years, Close-up Cantieri has become a space for dialogue and awareness, able to bring more and more people closer to the value of conservation and the collective responsibility towards cultural heritage.”

The last dates of May 14 and 21 will offer participants a new opportunity to closely observe ongoing interventions and activities, accompanied by the professionals engaged in the site’s restoration and maintenance work.
