Poster 30×42 food exhibition – extended

The Herculaneum Archaeological Park and the Fondazione Ente Ville Vesuviane announce the extension of the exhibition “From Egg to Apples. The Civilization of Food and the Pleasures of the Table in Herculaneum,” set up in the monumental spaces of Villa Campolieto, a splendid 18th-century mansion in the Golden Mile. The opening of the exhibition is extended to May 4, 2026.

A choice dictated by the great appreciation expressed by the public, which has shown a strong involvement for the theme of the exhibition and the immersive experience proposed. The extension thus represents a true Christmas gift for our audience, who will be able to continue to experience this journey through the history of food for many more months.

Opened last March 28, the exhibition takes visitors on an immersive journey dedicated to food culture in ancient Herculaneum, bringing into dialogue unique artifacts, visual suggestions and the refined Vanvitellian architecture of its host site. Food, understood as an identity and social element, becomes the common thread of a journey that unites present and past, thanks also to the presence of images of modern Herculaneum that dialogue with the everyday life of the Roman world.

The layout, designed in respect of the decorated rooms on the main floor of the villa, uses the “room within a room” formula to enhance both the archaeological collection and the historical spaces. The itinerary allows visitors to appreciate extraordinarily well-preserved organic finds-bread, cereals, legumes, fruit, eggs, seafood-returned in charred form from the eruption of 79 A.D., along with utensils, pottery and objects of daily use. A heritage that accurately documents the eating habits of the ancient Herculaneans, from production to food disposal.

The exhibition is part of a project launched in 2018 with the cycle “Herculaneum 1738-2018. Talent Past and Present,” aimed at highlighting the most significant aspects of life in the ancient city through three exhibitions dedicated respectively to gold, wood and food, hosted in the most representative places in the area: the Antiquarium of the Archaeological Park, the Royal Palace of Portici and Villa Campolieto.
