A journey through the flavors, shops, and cuisines of the ancient Roman city. Take part in the themed itineraries offered by the Park.
What did daily life in ancient Herculaneum taste like?
What smells came from the shops, the bakeries, the domestic kitchens?
The Archaeological Park of Herculaneum invites the public to discover it with “Food Places in Herculaneum,” a thematic itinerary that takes visitors on a fascinating journey dedicated to food and the pleasures of the table in Roman times.
An immersive and engaging experience that intertwines archaeology, history, and daily life, to reveal not only what ancient inhabitants ate, but also where they purchased, prepared, and consumed it.
An itinerary between street, home and shop
The itinerary unfolds through selected stops within the archaeological area, touching some of the most significant places linked to food culture:
- the thermopolium of Cardo III, a “take-away” refreshment point of the time, where quick meals were consumed along the road
- the Decumanus Maximus, the beating heart of the city, animated by shops and commercial activities
- the domus with still visible kitchens that tell the story of family eating habits
- an ancient oven, where the entire bread production cycle is illustrated
The itinerary also leads to the Ancient Beach, a place of great emotional impact, where anthropological investigations of the skeletons have allowed us to reconstruct the diet, health, and lifestyle of the population, and to the Boat Pavilion, dedicated to the relationship with the sea and fishing.
A comprehensive story that combines everyday gestures, home economics, and scientific discoveries.
An experience that continues outside the Park
By purchasing the combined Park + Exhibition ticket, you can also visit the exhibition “From Eggs to Apples. The Civilization of Food and the Pleasures of the Table in Herculaneum,” held at the splendid Villa Campolieto, a short distance from the site. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Ente Ville Vesuviane, expands the narrative with artifacts, reconstructions, and insights, offering a unique dialogue between archaeology and one of the most fascinating Bourbon villas on the Golden Mile.
Two places, one theme: food as the key to understanding Roman civilization.
