Extraordinary visits to Herculaneum’s Suburban Baths, one of the most fascinating and best-preserved sites in the Roman world, are back. After the great success of the previous opening, the public will once again have the opportunity to enter a unique restoration site and admire up close an authentic jewel of the ancient city.

Visits will be held on the following dates:

  • Saturday, November 15, 2025
  • Saturday, November 22, 2025
  • Saturday, November 29, 2025

Two rounds of visits are scheduled for each day:

  • Round 1: 10:30 am to 11:30 am – maximum 10 participants
  • Round 2: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – maximum 10 participants

The initiative, which gives visitors access to an area normally closed to the public, has already met with extraordinary enthusiasm: every available shift in previous openings sold out in just a few days.

A unique complex

The Suburban Baths, located between the city walls and the ancient seashore, represent the best-preserved Roman bath complex in the world. Originally built as the private bath of the Nonii Balbi family, one of the most influential in Herculaneum, they were later opened for public use.

The site still preserves fine marble floors, stucco decoration and painting of the highest quality, the very rare original wooden doors, and an innovative “samovar” heating system for the hot pools, unique in the world for its state of preservation. These extraordinary elements testify to the refinement and prestige of Herculaneum society, as well as to the great attention the Romans paid to wellness, body care and social life.

An opportunity to learn about the ongoing restoration

The special opening is made possible thanks to a major restoration and enhancement project, financed entirely with state public funds and carried out in collaboration with the Packard Humanities Institute, which has been working alongside the Herculaneum Archaeological Park for nearly twenty-five years in protecting and learning about the site.

This formula allows the public to enjoy a unique experience: to discover the extraordinary architecture and decorations of the spa complex and, at the same time, to closely observe the ongoing restoration activities.

Reservations and tickets

Visits are available by reservation only and with an integrated ticket of €20 (including entrance to the Park and a visit to the Suburban Baths), the proceeds of which will go to support the restorations of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park. Visits to the Baths are also free of charge in accordance with the law.
