“Archaeology in the Making”

Starting tomorrow, Friday, June 12, the Herculaneum Archaeological Park opens the European Days of Archaeology (EAD) 2026 with a three-day program of visits, workshops, and scientific meetings. The initiative, promoted by INRAP under the aegis of the French Ministry of Culture and coordinated in Italy by the Central Institute for Archaeology (ICA), focuses on the research process by opening its construction sites, laboratories, and archives to the public.

Friday, June 12 – Study Day at Villa Sora

Palazzo Vallelonga, Torre del Greco (NA)

Scientific session dedicated to the results of the 2025–2026 excavation campaigns at Villa Sora, conducted by the Park in collaboration with the Packard Humanities Institute (PHI). The area has yielded previously unpublished data on the villa d’otium, the resumption of life after the eruption of 79 AD, and the mosaic decoration and frescoes. Scientific coordinators: Domenico Camardo, Marina Caso, and Federica Colaiacomo.

Guided tour of the Central Baths, the Casa dell’Albergo Baths (special opening: the only private thermal complex in Herculaneum), and the restoration site of the Suburban Baths, the best-preserved Roman bathhouse in the world. Groups of up to 15 people. Free with a regular admission ticket.

The Perfect Dish – Family Workshop | 5:00 PM | 90 minutes | Free with exhibition ticket

Participants create their “perfect dish” by combining Roman food shapes. For the little ones, there’s a workshop on making the shapes.
