A small fishing boat, 2.83 meters long and 1.09 meters wide, made of holm oak (Quercus ilex L., family Fagaceae), cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L., family Cupressaceae), silver fir (Abies alba Mill., family Pinaceae), and elm (Ulmus sp., family Ulmaceae). It was found in the caldarium of the Western Baths, which, before the eruption of 79 A.D., had become a storage area for fishing equipment. Ancient Herculaneum was a coastal city, and a large portion of its population relied on fishing, as evidenced by the significant wear on the front teeth observed on some of the skeletons of the fugitives found on the ancient beach, which is linked to the habit of fishermen using their teeth to pull fishing lines when repairing nets.
